The Stone Clinic Debuts Blog Dedicated to Avoiding Knee Replacement Surgery
July 10th, 2010San Francisco, Calif. — June 8, 2010 – The staff of The Stone Clinic, renowned for its advanced techniques for joint health, has launched a blog dedicated to educating consumers on avoiding knee replacement surgery. Approximately 581,000 knee replacement surgeries take place in the United States each year, and that figure is expected to rise significantly as the baby boomer population ages.
With the aging of the United States population and the subsequent increase in arthritis patients, interest in avoiding knee replacement surgery will continue to rise. The Stone Clinic is dedicated to returning patients to their normal activities faster, fitter and stronger than they were before injury. Part of that dedication includes continuous research and innovation into lifestyle changes and other techniques to help avoid knee replacement surgery.
One such technique is Biologic Knee Replacement (BKR), which consists of four possible techniques and approaches to biologically rebuilding a knee and therefore avoiding knee replacement. In an arthritic knee that has lost the articular cartilage bearing surface of the joint, the technique of articular cartilage paste grafting uses a patient’s own stem cells to regrow their own cartilage and is performed in one outpatient surgical setting. Meniscus allograft replacement is a treatment for missing or torn meniscus cartilage. A recent addition to BKR is the ability for missing or torn meniscus to be reconstructed as a result of the recent FDA approval of the collagen meniscus implantation (CMI). And finally, ligament reconstruction may be used for a torn or missing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligaments (PCL) and the posterolateral corner using allograft tissue. BKR helps patients forestall or even avoid knee replacement surgery.
The Stone Clinic is a pioneer in biologic knee replacement and avoiding knee replacement surgery. Articular cartilage past grafting, meniscus transplantation, collagen meniscus implantation and ligament reconstruction techniques are just some of the procedures performed at The Stone Clinic.
