Nigeria’s Independence Day History Inspires ‘Inspiration for Change’ City of London Event

July 10th, 2010

Kettering, London ( PressReleaseStudio ) July 8, 2010 – Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule 50 years ago notwithstanding, her people are seeking inspiration for change as the country’s history remains plagued by poverty, declining educational standards, corrupt leadership and political instability. Millions of Nigerians and Africans who migrated to western countries inspired by the desire to change their fortune, are also discovering that life overseas offers very complex mental, physical and economic challenges and that tremendous skill, wisdom and effort are required to compete on the international playing field. Consequently, many highly skilled Nigerians and Africans feel frustrated, short-changed, disillusioned and anxious about the future… especially in the current economic recession.

In commemoration of the 50th Nigeria’s Independence Day Anniversary, The Creativity and Sense Organisation (with the support of various professionals and non-governmental associations), is hosting ‘Inspiration for Change!’ – a series of empowering and mind-shifting events inspired by the exciting new novel ‘Egg-Larva-Pupa-Woman’ written by Ogo Akubue-Ogbata.

The first ‘Inspiration for Change!’ event kicks off with style in the City of London at 7:00pm prompt on July 22nd 2010 in the snug and sophisticated confines of The Auberge – 56 Mark Lane, Fenchurch, London EC3R 7NE. An excellent line up of speakers (that includes Nigerian-born ex Harvard Director, Chioma Isiadinso, Mike Skidmore – who’s worked as a consultant for The British Council and The United Nations, as well as event facilitator Ogo Ogbata) will be on hand to share some hard hitting home truths, inspirational success stories and proven strategies for creating positive and accelerated change on a personal, career and community level.

The ‘Inspiration for Change!’ City of London Event is particularly suited to artists, scientists, educators, forward-thinking career and business professionals of Nigerian; African origin, supporters of Nigeria; Africa and professional people from all parts of the world who are interested in creating change for themselves and others.

The ‘Nigeria’s Independence Day’ inspired event offers an opportunity to network with like minded professional people who are poised to make positive changes in the world, enjoy world-class presentations by speakers who are skilled at challenging limiting thinking and a forum to debate on topical issues that affect us all personally and professionally. Attendees will also get the chance to preview and collect autographed copies of ‘Egg-Larva-Pupa-Woman’ (the debut literary novel that seamlessly chronicles Nigeria’s history from the colonial 1950s and decades of political turbulence up to the modern era of democracy)!

Following the ‘Inspiration for Change!’ City of London Event, a series of community initiatives will be launched (or brought to limelight) in order to ensure that tangible ‘action’ is set in motion to move Nigeria and Africa forward after 50 years of independence. The charity of the night is AFRUCA – the premier organisation promoting the welfare of African children in the UK.

Oakland County Road Commission Sleeping Well as Residents Homes Flood

July 10th, 2010

White Lake, MI – The Oakland County Road Commission has ignored a damaged storm drain for nearly two years now. Susan Downey purchased her home in June of 2008. At first everything was great; she was happy with the home and the neighborhood. “This is to be my last move,” said Susan. “I plan to live here for the rest of my life. I like White Lake; my grandfather was an original land owner here; he owned a quarter section of farm land and he is named in the White Lake History book.”

The nightmare began in the Fall of 2008 when the storm drain in front of Susan’s home became damaged, causing excess flooding to the front yard and crawl space under her home. “According to my next door neighbors and the previous owner, there has never been a problem with water in the crawl spaces,” said Susan. “Now I have standing water in my front yard and under my home.”

Susan called crawl space waterproofing companies to get estimates on the repair and was told the problem could not be fixed properly unless the Oakland County Road Commission repaired the storm drain. “He told me that he could put in a drain system with a sump pump but it would just run continuously as the water continued to cycle back in. I would be replacing a burned out sump pump at least once or twice a year, not to mention expensive electric bills,” said Susan.

Susan has made numerous calls to the Oakland County Road Commission who refuses to do anything about the problem. “The woman who answers the phone just says we have to hope for a dry summer so the water goes away,” said Susan. “They say that they are only working on roads that are flooded.”

Susan called Jim Runestad, the County Commissioner assigned to the White Lake area, hoping for positive results. Jim put in a call to the Oakland County Road Commission hoping for a solution. “I think he really cares,” said Susan, “however, nothing has been done to fix the problem.”

Susan has posted a blog with articles about her concerns with living in a home with a wet crawl space. She is very sensitive to mold and she is concerned about a wet crawl space being a breeding ground for termites and other vermin. Susan is reaching out to the public hoping someone will have a helpful suggestion. Please visit her blog at http://www.theoaklandcountyroadcommission.com/ to post your comments and suggestions.

Who is Responsible When Oakland County Road Commission Refuses to Fix Storm Drains?

July 10th, 2010

White Lake, MI – The Oakland County Road Commission has refused to repair a damaged storm drain in a White Lake neighborhood because it is not causing a problem with the road. They are not concerned with the health hazards associated with standing water in front of homes.

Susan Downey and several of her neighbors began calling the Oakland County Road Commission back in the Fall of 2008, when their front yards flooded. “The first time I called, they came out and pumped the water out,” said Downey. “It filled up again, but they refused to return, saying it was just going to continue to be an ongoing problem.”

Susan turned to family and friends for advice. “My father told me to call the Oakland County Commissioner,” said Downey. “He said he had a water problem in front of his home and his county commissioner resolved the problem within days.”

Hoping to finally get answers, Susan called Jim Runestad, the County Commissioner in White Lake. “He listened to my concerns and kept in communication with me, but so far, the problem has not been resolved. Jim made several calls to the Oakland County Road Commission on my behalf. The only answers I’ve received were ‘lack of funds’ or ‘lack of manpower’, to get the repairs done.”

The storm drain in this area requires ongoing maintenance. The Oakland County Road Commission has the equipment to manually move the water to another location; however, they refuse to spend the time and money on something that will always continue to be a problem. “They say they cannot fix it because we are in a low, wet area,” said Downey. “They will not maintain it either, because it’s too much work!”

Susan has created a blog where she continues to update the public about the problem. She is hoping that there is someone out there with “connections” or some advice as to what can be done to resolve the problem. Please visit http://www.theoaklandcountyroadcommission.com/ for updates and to make comments or offer advice.

White Lake Residents Get No Help From Oakland County Road Commission on Damaged Storm Drain

July 10th, 2010

White Lake, MI – The Oakland County Road Commission has done nothing to repair a damaged storm drain wreaking havoc on White Lake Residents. After spending over 3 months looking at homes for sale, Susan Downey finally settled on a 3 bedroom ranch on Lindholm Street. “Susan was looking for a small, one-story home,” said Ralph Maupin, close friend and real estate agent. “Her main concern was that the crawl space be dry. I’ve seen first hand how sensitive she is to mold and moisture.”

The home was inspected and the crawl space appeared to be dry with no sign of mold. The previous owner claimed that he never had a problem with water in the crawl space. Neighbors also say they have not had moisture problems since the road was paved, years ago. So, Susan purchased the home in June of 2008.

There is a ditch with a catch basin that serves as a storm drain in front of several of the homes on Lindholm Street. At first there was no problem; the ditch stayed dry and Susan was able to cut the grass; even in the lowest spots. In the Fall of 2008, the ditch started holding water; it did not drain away. Concerned about the health hazards associated with standing water, Susan called the Oakland County Road Commission. They said they would file a report and send someone out to inspect.

On Memorial Day Weekend, 2009, the front yard and crawl space were flooded. “I’ve known Susan for over 20 years; she was my full-time bookkeeper for 16 years and she never took even one sick day, said Ralph Maupin. “She assumed she had outgrown her allergy and asthma problems until this happened.”

The Oakland County Road Commission gave up on the problem and put a hideous looking plastic orange fence around the center of the ditch where the water level was over 3 feet deep. Susan thought this meant that they would be back soon to fix the problem. “I gave them the benefit of the doubt, thinking they were going ‘back to the drawing board’ to have a meeting and make a plan,” said Susan. “When I called them again in the middle of June, I was shocked at their answer. The person who answered the phone said, “The fence is a safety precaution and we just have to hope for a dry summer so the water goes away. What kind of answer is this? My crawl space is full of water. I’ve had waterproofing contractors out to inspect and give me an estimate on putting in a drain system and sump pump, but they said there is no place for the water to go unless the Oakland County Road Commission fixes the storm drain. The pump will run continuously and I’ll be replacing it every year as it burns up. I’m sure it would also run up my electric bills too.”

The next step was to call Jim Runestad, the County Commissioner assigned to the White Lake area. “I came over to Susan’s house on June 22, 2009 and we called him together,” said Ralph. “He was nice; he listened to our concerns and he really seemed to care. He said he would call the Oakland County Road Commission to see what was going on.”

The next day, Susan received a call form the Oakland County Road Commission. “They gave me the same (scripted) answer that they gave me the first couple times I called them,” said Susan. “The girl who called said ‘I will put in a report and someone will call you in a couple days.’” “No one from the Oakland County Road Commission has called me back yet,” said Susan.

By early July, the only answers Susan has received are to “hope for dryer days,” and “sorry, we cannot help.” Jim Runestad explained that the Oakland County Road Commission is under staffed and overwhelmed with roads to maintain and they lack the funds to hire maintenance people.

It’s been nearly two years since Susan began calling the Oakland County Road Commission and the County Commissioner, Jim Runestad. No one has done a thing in over a year. Susan is hoping someone will read this or visit her blog to post comments and suggestions as to a cure for the problem. Visit Susan’s blog at http://www.theoaklandcountyroadcommission.com/.

Dr. Gloria and Dr. Heidi Horsley of The Open To Hope Foundation Win Two Prestigious Book Awards

December 29th, 2009

New York, NY ( Pressreleasestudio ) December 29, 2009 – Real Men Do Cry named Two-TimeWinner in 2009 President’s Book Awards from the Florida Publishers Association in Recognition of Excellence in Publishing

The Florida Publishers Association recently honored the best books in 11 categories at the annual President’s Book Awards handed out in Sarasota, FL. Judges for the awards competition were professional librarians from across the state who specialize in scrutinizing books for excellence in all areas – readership value and appeal, writing, editing, layout, and design.

Real Men Do Cry: A Quarterback’s Inspiring Story of Tackling Depression and Surviving Suicide Loss by Eric Hipple with Dr. Gloria Horsley and Dr. Heidi Horsley was named the gold winner in the “President’s Pick” category and the silver winner in the “Adult Non-Fiction” category.

Real Men Do Cry is an incredible story of tragedy and triumph. Eric experienced a debilitating downward spiral after his 15-year-old son died of suicide. Bankrupt and jailed for drunk driving, Eric sought therapy for his own depression and was able to make an amazing comeback. Eric works with the University of Michigan Depression Center as an outreach coordinator, where he travels nationwide speaking to teens and adults about ways to recognize the signs of depression and risks for potential suicide.

Endorsements for Real Men Do Cry:

“This is an important book for everyone – fathers, husbands, sons, and the women who care about them. Eric’s message is powerfully delivered: men with depression need to seek help. It’s not only the courageous thing to do; it can save lives.”

– Robert Gebbia, Executive Director, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

“Real men get depression. As a good quarterback, Eric decided to share his knowledge and passion in the belief that he could help explain the game plan to win this struggle…”

– John F. Greden, M.D., Executive Director, University of Michigan Depression Center

“This book is difficult to put down. Eric Hipple . . . tells the real deal about men and depression. Seeking help for depression is not a weakness or a character flaw but a sign of strength and empowerment.”

– Donna Holland Barnes, Ph.D., President of the National Organization for People of Color Against Suicide

Eric’s life’s work—supporting a program of suicide prevention is fueled by the conviction that, thousands of deaths can be prevented through recognizing the signs of depression and intervention. Eric is an example that everyone can rise above adversity and make a difference in the world.

“We’re excited to bring Eric’s story and mission of hope to the world,” this was a very inspiring book to write with Eric, commented Dr. Gloria Horsley, Host of ‘Healing the Grieving Heart” and Founder and President of The Open to Hope Foundation, sponsor of “Healing the Grieving Heart” and The Grief Blog.
